About

The aim of our MFL Department is to inspire a love of languages as well as an appreciation for different cultures. We hope to broaden pupils’ horizons and educate them about the advantages of being globally aware and culturally sensitive. We aim to teach pupils the importance of being literate, of having excellent communication skills, and of speaking more than one language in our increasingly global community.

The development of communication skills, together with an understanding of the structure of language, lay foundations for future study of other languages and support the development of literacy skills in a pupils' own language. Pupils' knowledge of another language opens doors to a wide range of opportunities and careers.

Spanish

Lessons are highly interactive and pupils will practise the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing throughout Key Stage 3. We will build an awareness of Spanish grammar to enable pupils to manipulate language and express themselves with increasing confidence.

Over the three years we study a range of topics including personal information, free time activities, holidays, education and work, healthy lifestyles and home and local area. As well as studying language related to these topic areas, pupils also learn about life in Spain and other Spanish speaking countries and compare and contrast this with life in the United Kingdom.

Throughout the course, pupils are provided with opportunities to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. They explore the similarities and differences between Spanish and English and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways. Pupils have the opportunity to participate in lessons through the use of a variety of fun, group and pair work activities, games and team competitions.

Homework includes a range of tasks such as written work, research tasks and vocabulary learning. Pupils are encouraged to consolidate and enhance their learning at home via the use of language learning websites.

GCSE Spanish

Building on the KS3 language learning strategies, pupils will be able to continue to develop their skills in Spanish. Pupils will deepen their knowledge and application of grammar and will widen their understanding and use of vocabulary. Throughout KS4, we will practise a range of examination style questions and skills to ensure pupils are well prepared for the GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11.

As in Key Stage 3, home learning is encouraged via the use of online resources such as Vocab Express and Linguascope.

In addition to the enrichment activities listed below, extra revision and booster sessions are held throughout Key Stage 4.

Course Components

Following the GCSE AQA Spanish course will not only develop pupils' linguistic skills, it will also continue to develop their cultural awareness alongside a range of skills which they can use in other subjects, further education and the world of work. Good communication skills, problem solving techniques, ICT skills and a greater understanding of other cultures are all taught alongside the language itself as part of the GCSE Course.

Topics covered come under the following headings:

Theme 1: Identity and Culture (friends and family, hobbies, technology, festivals)

Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas of interest (home, town, global issues)

Theme 3: Current and future study and employment (school life, further education and career plans)

Pupils will be assessed in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each of the four exams holds equal weighting, making up 25% of the final grade. All skills will be assessed through final exams at the end of Year 11 at either Foundation or Higher Level. In the final exams, pupils will demonstrate their knowledge of the language and the language learning skills that they have developed throughout the course.
