"What are you looking for?"

"Speak Lord, your servant is listening."

Gospel: John 1:35-42. 'We have found the Messiah!'

John 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" — which translated means Teacher —, "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they
stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" — which is translated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You
are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas" — which is translated Peter.

Reflect

"What are you looking for?"

We are all searching for something. I wonder how many times each of us 'googles' something every day. Further to this, though, are we searching for something more meaningful? For many, there might just be a hole in our hearts
that no matter what we spend, consume, achieve, we simply can't fill. What is it you are searching for? Joy? Peace? Love? Where can that, ultimately and unconditionally, be found?

"So they went and saw where Jesus was staying"

These early disciples, the followers of John the Baptist, had been waiting for Jesus. John recognised Him, and the disciples followed Him immediately, no questions asked. They knew that it was He who they had been searching and waiting for.

"We have found the Messiah"

Andrew announces and proclaims the Messiah, Christ! How confident He is, safe in the knowledge that he has found the Saviour. He tells his brother, and from that moment on, becomes a guide. Leading people to Him. May we be inspired by the disciples in this way.
