Students will develop their literacy and numeracy skills using various computer programmes and other paper based programmes of work. Reading and comprehension activities play a dominant part of these lessons which then in turn support the rest of the curriculum. Historically students gain in knowledge with their reading and spelling throughout Key Stage 3.
Pupils work on a National Key Stage 3 Strategy called Progress Units. They will start with Phonics and their basic knowledge of the English Language will be stretched. They will also work on a computer based programme called Nessy which addresses Reading and Spelling. This programme uses interactive games to guide the Pupils through their learning.
Pupils work on a National Key Stage 3 Strategy called Progress Units. They will continue this year on Reading Between the Lines. The aim of this work will be to understand inference and ambiguity. They will also work on another programme called Guided Reading and work on a booklet called In The Rainforest. Pupils will continue to develop their literacy skills using the interactive Nessy Programme. Pupils work on a Numeracy based computer programme and also a Numeracy based booklet.

The aim of the Unit is to ready the students for external assessments and know the relevance of information they are reading and what the key aspects are to enable them to answer questions. They also work on the Beyond the Beyond Guided Reading booklet. Pupils further advance their skills on the Nessy Programme. Pupils continue to work on the Numeracy based computer programme and Numeracy based booklet.
